North Carolina is one of the best states for golf in America. Here's a sampling of some of the best public and semi-private courses in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.  Again, the Triangle benefits from its three top universities, as each offers public access to beautiful and challenging courses of the calliber usually reserved for private clubs.

The list also includes other highly ranked golf courses in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill and nearby that offer public access. I've offered a range of greens fees for each course that are dependent on day and time of play. Almost all of the courses allow you to book your tee times online.

1. Finley Golf Course at UNC

UNC Finley Golf Course

The UNC golf course is located just south of campus in Chapel Hill. Greens fees range from $30-$82 depending on day of the week and time of play. Great deals are available for weekday and twilight tee times. Tee times 14 days in advance.

2. Duke Golf Club / Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club

Durham CVB

This rolling golf course is located on the Duke campus and winds in and around the Duke Forrest. Enjoy at post game beverage at the Washington Duke Inn. Greens fees range from $30-$100. Robert Trent Jones course. Hotel guests and Triangle residents receive special rates. Tee times 14 days in advance.

3. Lonnie Pool Golf Course at NC State University

Arnold Palmer designed course. Unbelievable views of the Raleigh Skyline and NC State's Centennial Campus. Greens fees range from $35-$75.  Tee times for the general public available 5-7 days in advance.

4. The Preserve at Jordan Lake Golf Club

This semi-private club has one a number of awards including one from Golf Week as "One of America's 100 Best Residential Golf Courses." Fees range from $29 - $68. Tee times 7 days in advance. Enjoy lunch or dinner at the Grille after play.

5. Falls Village Golf Course

This Raleigh course is located within a housing development that has yet to be built so you get a real feeling of playing in the great outdoors with no one else around. Greens fees range from $35-$60.

6. Eagle Ridge

This Raleigh-based course gets great ratings.  The par 71 course was designed by Tom Kite and is only about 10 years old. Greens fees range from $40-$65.

7. The Neuse Golf Course

This stunning course is managed by Club Corp., and located just outside Raleigh in Clayton. Tee times for genral public 5 days in advance. Online greens fees range from $29-$65.

8. Occoneechee Golf Club

This is a family-owned, semi-private course located in Hillsborough. It's sort of a local secret so pace of play is great even on Saturdays. Greens fees range from $26-$40 with cart. Special rates for Junior and Senior golfers. General public can make tee times 5 days in advance.
