The neighborhood is known for its tree-lined streets, and its historic, bungalow-style homes, most of which were built during the first part of the twentieth century. Watts Hospital-Hillandale residents are known for their strong sense of community: many of them are active in the Watts Hospital Hillandale Neighborhood Association and involved in the local political process.

According to the 2000 census, residents of the Watts Hospital-Hillandale neighborhood tend to be educated (49% have bachelors or more advanced degrees) married (almost 54% of residents over 15 years of age are married) and Caucasian (82% of residents identified themselves as being white). The median age of a Watts Hospital-Hillandale resident is 36.8 years. The majority of the population (59.3%) is between 25 and 59 years of age.

Most Watts Hospital-Hillandale residents own their homes. As of 2000, 69.7% of households were owner-occupied.

The Watts Hospital-Hillandale neighborhood's northern border is I-85. From there, the neighborhood runs East to Broad St., South to Englewood Ave, and West to Bellevue Ave.

Watts Hospital-Hillandale is directly north of Old West Durham.

Watts Hospital-Hillandale Transportation:

No Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA) buses serve Watts Hospital-Hillandale directly. However, buses on the #1 and #11 routes make stops on nearby Broad St., and Hillsborough Rd., respectively. Hopefully, that will get better with the Triangle Regional Transit Vision Plan

Watts Hospital-Hillandale Attractions and Landmarks:

Watts Hospital first opened its doors in 1909. The hospital was a gift to the city of Durham from tobacco magnate George Washington Watts, who wanted to build the finest hospital in the Southeastern United States. He succeeded in building a gorgeous facility on a 27-acre campus. Although Watts Hospital closed its doors in 1976, the hospital buildings still stand and are now home to the NC School of Science and Math.

Other Watts Hospital-Hillandale landmarks include the 18-hole Hillandale Golf Course, which was built in 1911, and stately, tree-lined, West Club Boulevard.

Watts Hospital-Hillandale Parks:

Residents of Watts Hospital-Hillandale enjoy using the neighborhoods four parks: Oval Park, Indian Trail Park, Westover Park and Belmont Park. Four-acre Oval Park is considered "the heart of the neighborhood", and is the site of many annual community events, including the Watts Hospital-Hillandale Fourth of July Parade. The community also has a trail network which includes a half-mile section of the West Ellerbee Creek Trail which runs between Indian Trail Park and Westover Park.

Watts Hospital-Hillandale Shopping, Services and Dining:

There isn't too much shopping to be found within the boundaries of this almost purely residential neighborhood. However, there is plenty of shopping nearby, including some within walking distance.

Broad Street, on Watts Hospital-Hillandale's eastern boundary has plenty of shopping, including a Whole Foods Grocery Store. And Durham's Ninth Street Shopping District is less than half a mile South of Englewood Ave, the neighborhood's southern boundary.

Watts Hospital-Hillandale Schools:

Students living in the Watts Hospital-Hillandale neighborhood are in the Durham County Public Schools system. The local elementary school is E.K. Powe, Brogden is the local middle school, and Riverside is the neighborhood's assigned high school.

Watts Hospital-Hillandale Real Estate:

According to the Triangle MLS service, during 2006, 29 homes were sold in Watts Hospital Hillandale, and they had an average selling price of just over $220,000. The homes sold averaged around 1700 square feet in size, and had an average of three bedrooms and one bathroom. Homes in Watts Hospital-Hillandale also sold about 25% more quickly than the Durham average, tending to sell in 64 days in contrast to Durham 's 81 day average.

Current listings (as of August 2008) include a two bedroom, two bath, 1170 square foot bungalow built in 1915 with an asking price of $215,000.
