Hayes Barton is one of Raleigh 's historic Five Points Neighborhoods, which were planned suburban developments built in the 1920's. Hayes Barton, designed by prestigious landscape architect Earle Sumner Draper, is the neighborhood that inspired the designs of the other Five Points neighborhoods: Bloomsbury, Vanguard Park , Georgetown and Roanoke Park . Hayes Barton is one of Raleigh 's most prestigious neighborhoods.

Hayes Barton is served by several Capital Area Transit (CAT) bus routes, including the #2, #6, #8 and # 16 routes. Buses on those routes make stops at Raleigh attractions such as the State Fairgrounds and Crabtree Valley Mall. The fare on CAT buses is $1.00 per ride, or $36.00 for a one month unlimited ride pass.

Hayes Barton Baptist Church was founded in 1926, when Hayes Barton was a new community. Today, the church building is one of the best-known landmarks in the area.

The Josephus Daniels House (1520 Caswell St.) was home to statesman Josephus Daniels from 1920-48. Daniels served as Secretary of the Navy, was ambassador to Mexico and owned The Raleigh News and Observer. Daniels kept notable company: his friends included William Jennings Bryan and Franklin Roosevelt.

Hayes Barton has a mix of truly old-fashioned businesses and trendy, "new-fangled" ones. For example, the Five Points Barber Shop is a real old-time barbershop specializing in no-frills haircuts while the Nofo gift shop, right down the street, sells some of the trendiest, quirkiest, merchandise on the face of the earth.

The Rialto Theatre is home to Burning Coal Theatre Company and shows independent and cult classic movies, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
