Glenwood South Raleigh:

Not too long ago, Glenwood South was a gritty warehouse district. However, it is quickly becoming one of Raleigh's trendiest areas. In fact, the area is growing so fast, it seems like new high-rise condos are springing up overnight, and young professionals, most of whom seem to have quite a taste for Italian furniture, sushi, and other marvels of design, are moving into them as fast as they can.

Glenwood South Demographics:

According to the 2000 U.S. Census, a whopping 56% of Glenwood South's residents have earned a bachelor's or more advanced degree and over 70% of Glenwood South's residents are single or divorced. Most of them, 63%, had moved to Glenwood South within the past five years.

Glenwood South on the Map:

Glenwood South's Northern boundary is West Peace Street. From there, the neighborhood runs East to Dawson Street, West to St. Mary's Street and South to Morgan Street.

Glenwood South Transportation:

Glenwood South is served by CAT routes #16 and 6. Keep in mind that route #16 doesn't run on Sundays, and route #6 doesn't run in after 7 p.m.

If you drive to Glenwood South, as most people do, you may find that parking spaces are hard to come by. Glenwood South's only public parking lot, located at 610 North St., has only has 50 spaces. Most of Glenwood South's restaurants and boutiques have small parking lots for their patrons, and most of them also have strict parking (and towing) policies.

Glenwood South Attractions and Landmarks:

The most noticeable landmarks in Glenwood South are the massive new buildings going up. However, there are some buildings and businesses of historical interest, such as the Askew-Taylor Paints and Art Supplies store, which has been located at 110 Glenwood Ave. since 1946. Another historic landmark in Glenwood South is Elmwoom, a 19th Century house located at 16 North Boylan Ave. which has been home to many prominent North Carolinians including judges and ambassadors.

Glenwood South Shopping and Services:

Trendy boutiques including Hollywood-style boutique Catch 22, and Revolver Consignment Boutique, line the streets of South Glenwood. Home furnishing stores such as Glenwood South Antiques and interior design showrooms such as Renaissance Bath Design are plentiful. After all, those new condos have to get furnished somehow!

A list of this neighborhood's unique shops and services wouldn't be complete without Primp Salonbar (401 N. West Street). Primp is a beauty salon/bar, so, if you've always wanted a stiff drink before getting your bangs trimmed, now's your chance.

Glenwood South Bars and Restaurants:

Zely and Ritz appeals to trendy locovores (local food eaters), while Hibernian Restaurant and Irish Pub offers Irish music (sometimes live), Guinness Beer by the pint, and free Wi-Fi access.

The Red Room and Hi5, located at 510 Glenwood Ave. are great places to get appetizers and drinks--the Red Room often features live DJs, and Hi5 offers giant "meal-sized" appetizers for only $5.

If you really want to get your groove on, check out Haven, a posh night spot and "member's only" club (this has to do with NC's liquor laws) whose web site plays Bitter:Sweet's "The Mating Game". Enough said.

Glenwood South Schools:

Students living in Glenwood South are in the Wake County School System, and can attend Wiley Elementary School (home to the International Magnet Program), Daniels Middle School (home to the IB magnet program) or Broughton High School (also home to an IB magnet program). These schools all run on a traditional school calendar, as opposed to a year-round calendar and all have "base" programs in addition to their magnet programs.

Alternate school assignments can potentially be made if a student's parents want their child to attend one of Wake County's year-round calendar schools.

Glenwood South Real Estate:

Glenwood South's condos don't come cheap. In fact, those granite counter tops often come at a price somewhere around $350/foot, meaning that a 1200 square foot condo in one of those new buildings is going to cost about $420,000. In fact, according to the National Association of Realtors, the average home in Glenwood South costs $399,900, earning the neighborhood the distinction of being the second most expensive neighborhood in Raleigh, after North Hills.

Some rental housing is available in Glenwood South, and rents average about $1,000/month--but rentals with luxury amenities cost much more than the average!
