Raleigh-Durham Primary Voting

By Tammy Biondi, About.com

North Carolina's primary elections take place on May 6 this year, and will determine who is on the ballot in the state's various elections. While the primaries don't usually get much attention, this year they are attracting the eyes of the whole nation: they are an important element in determining the eventual Democratic presidential nominee.

North Carolina's primary elections also will determine the nominees for US Senate seats, the state's governor, lieutenant governor, commissioner of labor, treasurer and various judgeships (NC is a state where judges are elected, not appointed).

Because the candidates for so many offices are being determined, it's important to brush up on who you will be voting for before you get to your polling place: informational material other than sample ballots will not be available inside your polling place.

One-Stop Early Voting

One-Stop, no excuse voting is available to all Raleigh-Durham area voters. The early voting period starts nineteen days before the election and ends three days before the election.

Voters who are eligible to vote, but who haven't yet registered, can now register to vote and cast their ballots on the same day. However, they must do so at their local one-stop polling place during the early voting period. Unregistered voters will not be able to register on the election day itself, so they must get their votes in early.

Wake County Voting

Citizens who are eligible to vote in Wake county can register to vote and/or vote early at any one of Wake county's One-Stop voting locations.

On primary day, Wake County citizens will have to cast their ballots at their local precinct's polling place.

Durham County Voting

will take place at the Durham County Board of Elections Office, at 706 W. Corporation St. in Durham.

On primary day, Durham County citizens must vote in their assigned polling locations.

Voting in the Triangle's Other Counties

Chatham County, Orange County, Alamance County, Johnston County and other Triangle-area primary elections will follow the same state-mandated time-frame and voter registration laws as Wake and Durham counties.
