Carrboro's Acme restaurant is one of the old-timers in the Triangle's ever-growing foodie constellation. Friendly relaxed service in a warm-hued environment invites couples and families to gather for lively conversation. But grab a booth in the corner or a table on the patio and it suits for a great date night as well.

Discover One of the South's Top 10 Tastes

Named one of the "Top 10 Tastes in the South" by Southern Living, Acme is chef-owned. Kevin Callaghan has been the owner since the restaurant's start and took over as head chef in 2003.

If you haven't been in awhile, the restaurant has done wonders with their outdoor back patio, adding a long bar, six or seven tables and a landscaped water feature that turns it from just another eating area into a destination.

The menu is divided into small plates, bowls, plates and sandwiches so it's easy to share and try different things. The menu choices are not extensive, but span a broad range of flavors and heritage so it's never difficult to find something that appeals. I encourage you to try one of the abundant fresh fish selections from the menu. They're always paired with creative preparations of seasonal veggies and lean more towards comfort food than the exotic. I've also never been disappointed with the burger. It's one of the best in town.

And don't just think of Acme as a place for dinner. It's got a great bar as well. Their specialty cocktail list is always fun -- most recently I tried a watermelon mojito that was really refreshing. Like the menu, the wine by the glass menu isn't extensive, but it's usually not hard to find a choice you'll like.

Lastly, keep an eye out for Acme's special events. If you keep an eye on my blog or my newsletter I'll try to let you know in advance. Their wine dinners have a reputation of being exquisite.

Bottom Line

Good for friends; good for romance. Great outdoor seating. Neighborhood feel. Comfortable food that exceeds expectations every time.
