One of the Triangle's favorite outdoor venues is the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek in Raleigh. Just southeast of the city and only 2 miles from the interstate, it's a three-season favorite for big outdoor shows. With huge amounts of grass parking, the pre-show tailgate party is often as much an attraction as the performances.
Previously known as the Alltel Pavilion, Walnut Creek seats 20,000 and hosts classic bands, up-and-comers and cult favorites. Past performances included Tom Petty, No Doubt, Pearl Jam, Sugarland, Kings of Leon, Dave Matthews Band and of course frequent visits from Jimmy Buffett. You can't bring alcohol inside the pavilion, but 21+ can get a bracelet once inside and then buy it there. There's plenty of food for purchase too, but don't expect a bargain.
Parking fees are included in ticket costs so there's no need to have cash on hand when you arrive. Some people feel this is unfair since everyone is charged for parking even if you pack a lot of people in one car. Blankets, low sitting lawn chairs and backpacks are all allowed, coolers and and outside food and drink are not.
