The NC Museum of Art is one of Raleigh-Durham's biggest cultural attractions. It hosts permanent and traveling art exhibitions as well as educational programs for children and adults, and a popular series of film screenings and concerts.
NC Museum of Art's History and Facilities
The NC Museum of Art was first opened in 1956, and was housed in a building in downtown Raleigh. In 1983, the NC Museum of Art moved to its present site, on Blue Ridge Rd., right down the street from the NC State Fairgrounds. The NC Museum of Art has an impressive amount of gallery space, including four galleries for special exhibitions.The NC Museum of Art's facilities also include The Nancy Susan Reynolds Education Wing (houses an auditorium, classroom/studio space, art library), the 500-seat Joseph M. Bryan, Jr. Theater (outdoor amphitheater), and the 164-acre Museum Park, which is home to walking trails and a larger-than-life sculpture garden.
The NC Museum of Art is currently undergoing a huge expansion project, which is expected to add over 120,000 square feet to the museum's existing 181,300 square foot building.

Admission to the NC Museum of Art's permanent collections is free. Admission to the museum's special exhibits usually is not. The museum's permanent exhibits are wide-ranging in scope: ancient and modern art from all over the world is featured in the museum's collections. The collections include works of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman and American art as well as collections of African, Jewish and Oceanic Art.The NC Museum of Art is open six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday. The museum is closed on Mondays. Weekday (except Monday)and Saturday hours are 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., except for Fridays, when the museum is open 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Sunday hours are 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
