The Downtown Durham Art Walk is an semiannual event presented by the Durham Arts Council. It usually takes place during the first weekend of April and the first weekend of November, and showcases the work of dozens of artists who exhibit their works in various downtown Durham venues. As of the 2008 tour, there were 41 different sites, including cafes, stores and theaters, that housed temporary art galleries over the Art Walk weekend.

During the Downtown Durham Art Walk gallery hours (10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday), many featured artists are present to mingle with guests, and answer questions about everything from their creative processes to the history of Durham and anything in between. Of course, in addition to socializing, the artists are also more than happy to assist visitors with the selection and purchase of one of their masterpieces.

In fact, the Downtown Durham Art Walk is a great place to go shopping for unique artwork created by local artists, often offered for sale at prices that an average Triangle dweller can afford to pay.

The Durham Arts Council does a great job of promoting the Art Walk, and does a great job of showing off some of Downtown Durham's trendy sites, local business and notable architecture during the course of the event. Walkers who need a break from looking at artwork (yes, it does happen!) can chill out and enjoy the full schedule of live musical performances, ranging from bagpipers to jazz, at the Durham Art Walk Rocks! tent.

Visitors who stay the course and get signatures from at least 15 different artists (at fifteen different venues), are eligible for free prizes, including some pretty nifty Downtown Durham Art Walk tee shirts that make great souvenirs. Cool, huh?

The Downtown Durham Art Walk is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Durham Arts Council at (919) 560-2787.
