I Spy. . . Lots of Spies in Raleigh!

From Tammy Biondi, About.com GuideMarch 23, 2009

James Bond fans, take note: the 2009 Raleigh Spy Conference is going to be held at the NC Museum of History in downtown Raleigh from Wednesday, March 25 until Friday, March 27. The theme of this year's conference is "sexpionage", or more specifically, "lady spies" and their "crucial role in espionage from ancient civilizations through. . . today's sophisticated environment of modern espionage".

The conference schedule includes a welcome reception at The Pit Authentic Barbecue restaurant and talks by prominent members of the intelligence community including former FBI Special Agent In Charge I.C. Smith and counterintelligence specialist Brian J. Kelley.

Of additional local interest to Triangle-area residents is the fact that Mr. Kelley was involved in building the case against Felix Bloch, a former US State Department official and current Chapel Hill resident, who is suspected of sharing classified information with the Soviet KGB. To the great disappointment of Mr. Kelley, Felix Bloch was never brought to trial. However, he did lose his job at the State Department and had to get a new job: he has been a bus driver with Chapel Hill Transit for about 17 years. If you want to read more about Mr. Bloch, check out this N & O article about him.

Anyhow, the Raleigh Spy Conference has a registration fee of $250 but, in honor of this year's theme, ladies can register for a reduced fee of $125. The registration form is available online, and registration can be done over the phone by calling (919) 831-0999 or in person on Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. (at The Pit), or Thursday morning from 8:00-8:45 a.m. at the NC Museum of History.
